The Star Tarot

Cathy McClelland has always had a fascination for symbolism, nature and the mystery of life. The tarot seemed to blend the themes together. As Cathy became familiar with the imagery of the tarot, she understood how visual symbols can speak to the soul sometimes better than the spoken or written word. She felt a deep connection with the idea that the cycles in one's life match up with the cycles of nature, the moon and the starry universe. The stars hold a strong focus for Cathy. The endless multitude of stars that one can gaze upon, dream upon, lets the imagination sore. All of this inspired her to create the Star Tarot Majors.

In 1991 McClelland decided to create her Star Majors. The actual painting did not begin until 1994 with the Fool. Her first five majors were The Fool, The Magician, The High Priestess, The Empress and the Emperor. These paintings were quite large taking up to three months to complete. Her creative process included meditation, long walks in the woods, nature, research and the influence of multi cultural symbols and myths.

In 1996 she took an hiatus from the project until the summer of 2005, when she decided to finish the series in one year. 17 paintings to go. She painted the next 17 painting at a smaller size to accommodate her deadline. In October of 2006 she finished the majors of the Star Tarot.

The Star Tarot Majors was an oversized deck that worked beautifully for meditation, altar cards, daily cards and divination puposes.
The Star Tarot Majors was self published by Cathy and is now retired.

Cathy is currently working on the minors to complete The Star Tarot and has signed with Schiffer Publishing.
